It is a strange development that a massive proportion of the media coverage in the world of technology is focused around tablet devices. It may well be because tablet devices are the newest thing in the always moving the world of technology or merely because they are lighter and more compact; however you look at it tablet devices are everywhere you look. But the only question that should be asked is, do people really need tablets? Are they necessary, can they do anything more than merely allow you to do the odd bit of online browsing whilst lying around in your living room and are they not merely a very profitable marketing exercise? Why not stay with our good old laptops? A laptop is far better for computing and for games you might as well go with a Playstation or the xbox 360 kinect . Are tablets honestly any different than cheap laptops which cost about the same? This article will give you seven reasons why they aren’t.
Reason 1: Laptops are designed to be tougher, stronger and more robust.
Tablet computers do come with protective cases (if you spend money on them) but even if you get these protective cases and covers the fact is that tablet devices will be more at risk of breaking. With unprotected screens and a flimsier build tablet devices have less robustness of many modern laptops.
Reason 2: Laptop Computers have Much Higher Storage Ability and much Greater Processors.
It will come as no surprise to people that when you talk about storage capacity if you are using a tablet or ipad 2, the memory swiftly gets full. If that wasn’t bad enough, there is no option for a memory card that you can use for more storage (at least in most of the tablet computers currently on sale). Comparing them with modern and cheap laptops, laptops offer much larger memory abilities.
As with the processors, again laptops have much greater processors and processing power than tablet devices.
Reason 3: Laptops Offer More Connectivity with countless extensions, connections and add-on options.
There are a great many things that tablet devices have in their favour, but connectivity is not one of these. Unless you only want to connect to other computer devices through wi-fi you will not be happy with the connectivity of your tablet device. In comparison, laptops provide everything from Firewire, USB 2 and Thunderbolt to Bluetooth, HDMI, VGI & DVA and don’t forget eSata and connection to various audio and optical devices such as wireless headphones. It doesn’t end there however. As well as the usual built in optical drives nowadays you can get laptops that also provide surround sound, dab digital radio, tv receivers and even a freesat recorder.
Reason Four: Tablet computers are Essentially Built Only to Work Online.
The reason that tablet devices don’t provide much storage or processing ability is that they are built with the cloud at their heart. This lets them to be small and light, but it can also mean there is not a great deal you can use them for offline, as there is only so much media they can store. No wi-fi? No tablet.
Reason Five: Laptops Are Much Much Better at Editing Media
Assuming that you download the right software, editing your media and documents will not present you with any difficulties for even the most basic of laptops these days. That said, if you go with a tablet, you will be stuck with a very limited offering of options. Tablet computers are also often unable to handle the broad offering of media offered online; ipads as one example don’t even allow Flash.
Reason 6: When it Comes to Price, Laptops are Much Better Value
Lastly of course, there is the small matter of price. With so many extra features included with laptops it seems odd that you are able to get a competent and cheap laptop for the same price as your tablet device. Are these tablet devices really worth purchasing when a laptop will cost roughly the same?
